THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER

chapter one

the old keeper climbed the spiral stairs every evening.
one hundred and twelve steps.
each one worn smooth by decades of boots.

at the top, the lamp waited.
a brass beast with a glass heart,
spinning light across black water.

one night, the storm came early.
rain hit the windows sideways.
the keeper lit the lamp with shaking hands.

she whispered to the flame: stay bright.
the flame listened.
it always did.

by morning the sea was calm again.
boats dotted the harbor like scattered seeds.

the keeper made tea.
she watched the sun rise through salt-streaked glass.

another night survived.
another light kept burning.
